ISLAMIC MENTAL HEALTH AND PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT

Grounded in an understanding of Islamic principles and solid work with Muslim (Filipino) communities, the Islamic Mental Health and Psychosocial Support training program is designed for mental health, humanitarian and healthcare workers, religious leaders, teachers, project managers, and community members seeking to apply an Islamic framework in preventing and/or responding to humanitarian emergencies and in designing and implementing sustainable community development programs. The core principles, guidelines and intervention pyramid being used by international humanitarian organizations, and trauma-informed care principles will also be discussed in relation to the Islamic framework.

As a bonus, the training includes psychological first aid (a combination of Islamic and humanitarian principles for providing compassionate, practical and immediate support in times of need).

Your instructor: Sr. JANE MARIE DIMACISIL-SAMUR

Sr. Jane is a Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Consultant whose 15+ years of experience include:

  • conducting psychosocial processing sessions and psychological first aid for disaster survivors, children orphaned by the Mindanao conflict, justice involved individuals, families of victims of involuntary disappearances, and fellow humanitarians;
  • training of trainers, health/community workers, educators and youth; and,
  • module development and integration of IMHPSS into peace education programs and the aftercare program for children & youth returnees and their families.

She led the development of the first training module on MHPSS for Muslim Filipinos sponsored by Anak Mindanao and the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos, and consequently conducted a series of Mindanao training of trainers. She continued to develop the framework through her work with various organizations at the grassroots. To date, the IMPHSS approach is used not only by emergency responders but has also been integrated into Teach Peace Build Peace Movement’s aftercare program for children and youth associated with armed forces and armed groups in the Philippines.

Sr. Jane is a registered member of the International Association of Muslim Psychologists, and a Life, Leadership and Management Coach. Aside from these, she also has certifications in Islamic Counselling and Psychology (levels 1 & 2), Fiqh and Usul Al-Fiqh, and Qur’an and Sunnah Studies. She served as an external editor for Türkiye’s Directorate of Religious Affairs’ (Diyanet) Filipino translation project. She is also part of the Filipino translation team for Bediüzzaman Said Nursi’s Risale-i Nur collection.

Prior to focusing full-time on mental health and psychosocial support, she served as Coordinator and Lecturer for Social Sciences, and Adviser of the Nursing Student Body Organization at the UPH-Dr. Jose G. Tamayo Medical University, Laguna, Philippines.
